| All across the United States,
thriving community gardens are greening city streets. Overgrown, trash-strewn vacant lots
are being transformed by community action into lively and productive neighborhood gardens.
Children and adults share in the fun of growing a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and
flowers for their own use. In doing so, they are also helping to improve the beauty,
spirit, and even the safety of the neighborhoods. Although Community gardening is very popular today, the idea is not a new one. The first farms sprang up in the 1890's as a result of an economic depression. Since then, wars and hard times have often driven city people to try growing their own food, but when the troubled years ended, their gardens were abandoned. Today's city dwellers have rediscovered the fringe benefits of creating community gardens, and many are doing it for fun. City gardens are more than just places for growing food and watching nature at work. They can be a community center, an outdoor theater, and a playground all rolled into one. City garden members, young and old, agree that this time community gardens are here to stay ! "Greening The City Streets -The Story Of Community Gardens" By Barbara A. Huff
